Just in time for Thanksgiving, Theater NOW presents “Over the River and Through the Woods,” a comedy about faith, family, and most of all, food!
This touching and hilarious play receives its encore production from Theater NOW, a Twin Cities theater company presenting contemporary and classic plays that explore the family journey through the generations, witnessing the love, pain, and laughter of our most sacred family stories.
Nick is an up-and-coming marketing executive in New Jersey who’s just been offered his dream job in Seattle. But first he has to break the news to his loving but overbearing Italian-American grandparents at their weekly Sunday dinner.
Needless to say, Nick’s grandparents—Frank and Aida, Nunzio and Emma—aren’t happy. They can’t understand why Nick would want to leave his family behind to move cross-country. Maybe if he could just meet the right girl, he’d settle down…
Enter Caitlin O’Hare, Emma’s lovely—and single—neighbor. As the grandparents scheme to bring the two wayward young people together, the play lovingly explores the ties that bind—and sometimes strangle—the generations.
Theater NOW’s Artistic Director Robert Marcus explains, “‘Over the River and Through the Woods’ is a wonderful dramatic comedy that exemplifies Theater NOW’s mission of producing work that takes our audiences through a journey of family and generations.”
“It’s significant that most of the action in the play takes place around the kitchen table,” Marcus adds, “because that’s the place where the generations meet. Everyone in the audience can see themselves somewhere around that table—either the older generation trying to pass their wisdom along to the younger, or the younger members trying to find their individual identities in the midst of family.”
